Three weeks have passed since Marlon and Andre confirmed the Official invitation for SA Navy personnel to join the new sport of coastal rowing in Simons Town, and what an exciting time it has been as I reflect on the happenings. No sooner had the Signal been posted when both Marlon and Andre were swept away on courses, and the whole project seemed to be dangling by its rowing shoes. But Cometh the hour and Cometh the men and women!
There was Geordie, Vashti and David Shilton (our SA Champion Fin Sailor from the S A Navy Sailing Centre) The Youlets had been prepared by Bryne and Allan, the tyres on the Chariots had even been pumped up. Andre had addressed the first group of keen recruits and had them rowing on the ergo, whilst Geordie and Vashti organised themselves in taking the water sessions.
Geordie has been rowing since April, whilst Vashti only started in September, and David in October! Fifteen members of the Navy have now been regular participants and much interest is growing in the West Dockyard as more people become aware of the fun and camaraderie that is expressing itself as the new rowers take to the boats and experience the gratification of moving a rowing boat in the magnificent surroundings of Simons Bay.
